We are in the process of inventorying our switch gear for a hardware replacement project. Since we have configured our devices to only accept SNMP queries from the IP address of our InterMapper server, I have had to shutdown the InterMapper server to allow for another server running Cisco's LAN Management Solution to SNMP query all the devices to generate a network inventory.
Cisco's LMS product isn't too hard to use and it does an excellent job inventorying Cisco devices. But we are running into issues using Cisco LMS to inventory non-Cisco devices that we are replacing, or would just like to see included in the Inventory. What would really be handy is if InterMapper had a customizable reporting function on the devices that are configured in InterMapper. In most environments, I would expect InterMapper would have maps already configured with all devices anyone would expect in an inventory report. The challenge might be deduping the data when a device appears multiple times in a map (grouped) or in multiple maps. Where a report could be customizable, is to allow filters on specific devices such as "Dell Switches". The columns in the report could be user defined and associated with a specific OID. An example would be a column titled "Firmware Revision". In this example, the report would provide Firmware Revisions only for those manufactures/models that use that OID for Firmware Revisions. Where a report is filtered and a custom column added, that increases the likelihood of getting complete information in the custom column.
