George, I would appreciate some constructive messages from you. This thread contained mostly FUD from your side.
That's pretty funny Sascha, since every message you've sent has included some sort of catty comment or another.
NFS locking does not work under SunOS 4 at all, nor on older versions of Linux, nor (to my knowledge) on older versions of FreeBSD. Not every place has the opportunity to upgrade their machines. Many companies have strict change-control policies that prohibit or delay upgrading of operating systems.
lockd has notorious reliability issues under many System V based systems: there are inumerable patches for all versions of solaris dealing with lockd issues.
There are lockd reliability issues on OnTap (the network appliance os used on their filers). Lots of patches and bug reports there as well.
Up until 2.2.13 linux kernels had what look like serious interoperability issues in regards to locking with other nfs servers.
That's a short list.
