I guess the RFC is still being drafted, but some bits are still quite unclear, particularly whether the proposal includes deprecating existing functions. My suggestion would be to not deprecate anything for the time being. Although the new api may be better, it's a small improvement, and would be quite annoying for people who don't need to migrate. Longer term, splitting up/forking the core libraries, so that it is easier to evolve them is something we should be looking at.
