libxzml2 is a rather simple install so upgrading it in the Mac world is a simple build however, those dependent on RPM's, perhaps you should consider something that is more commonly found.

If at all possible, I should not have to upgrade the libraries that ship with my OS just to upgrade to a new version of PHP. Apple is a bad example, since they don't exactly offer stellar support, but we have many customers who run RHEL and will _not_ upgrade outside of the RHEL upgrade path for dependent libraries, as among other things it limits their support options. Plus you risk breaking all the other applications on your box that depend on libxml2.

When at all possible, you should be liberal in the version you support, with the caveat that if you want all the latest features then you will likely need to get a very recent version of a particular library. This means judicious use of ifdefs to keep support for 'reasonable' versions of libraries.
