Yes from my point of view there could coexist a base class that supports all basic features and an advanced class happily in one php universe and there is even place for peoples own stuff and of course a PEAR_Date (or however named too). The base class could for instance have methods that return iterators for date ranges, say DateRange or DateIterator. That would allow pretty neat code and ease the pain in heavy date dependant code very much. (Actually something i proposed right from the first moment i heared of pecl/date or ext/date).
