The problem with that option is that it doesn't provide a solution for further classes. And it is worst of both worlds (Ugly name in the global namespace unless Date is considered the prefix which I don't consider a wise choice. And why would Date become DateTime and not DateDate anyway?). But it's better than Date and Timezone, that's for sure.

And please stop the PEAR bashing, this issue has only marginally to do with PEAR.
