the problem is exactly that, it is backward incompatible, and PHP 5 is
available in less than 20% of the hosts out there.. you can imagine
that hosts running 5.2.1 are practically unexistant.

and the old mistakes are repeating  over and over again, this is the
same reason why the PHP5 adoption is in a sorry state after 5 years,
it will be much worse with PHP6 unless you change this odd policy of
breaking people's code on every release.

But looks like you will have to learn this lesson the hard way..
