My preference would be to completely remove this behaviour, by which protected methods can be invoked from outside of their declaring class's hierarchy. In other words, remove all uses of zend_get_function_root_class() (it is only ever used in conjunction with zend_check_protected()). So I'm in favour of your patch. And I think the declaration of zend_get_function_root_class() could be removed too, as it isn't used anymore after applying the patch.
