Having put up with a 'smartphone' for the two years of the contract, I now have
a 'real smartphone' - an N900. I'm having some success with pushing updates into
my own code base direct from it, but have yet to do anything heavy ;)

You have another 20 odd years on that one. Just make sure she picks a partner
who is also a php programmer ;) I'm getting my daughters partner trained up
nicely :)
