Actually the number of addenda (80 bytes for information) can be 9,999 for EDI related CTX transactions (about 80,000 bytes if my math is right and you accept rounding); see NACHA 2001 Operating Guidelines (second part of the Rules,) section IV chapter II addenda records, page OG 89, just to clarify the quote below.
CTX is the NACHA standard entry class code meaning Corporate Trade Exchange transaction using ASC X12 Interchange Control Structure, ANSI ASC X12 transaction sets containing BPR or BPS data segment or payment related UN/EDIFACT syntax.

Subject: XML vs. EDI
Chuck,
In a previous discussion thread, the issue of ACH addenda record size came
up, and you noted:
"ACH addenda records are of a fixed size, essentially
card image records, as in 80 bytes! However, you can have up to
999 of them. This works (mostly) for EDI, but it's still not
enough for XML."
How do EDI and XML compare, byte for byte, and what adjustments
might have to be made for "financial XML" to replace "financial EDI?"
Regards,
Emery Kobor
