Below is the answer I got back from the BBC to my contact message regarding the
change:

Dear Rob

Thank you for contacting BBC iPlayer support team.

I understand you are unhappy that without any warning and providing any
alternative Real Media format has discontinued to access local Radio stations.

Unfortunately, a delay in the delivery of the WMA format has lead to a short gap
in the availability of local radio programming on internet radios and similar
devices that were dependent on Real Media. We hope this will be resolved by the
end of September.

Nevertheless, I can assure that I have fully registered your comments on this
issue. They have been made available to those responsible for maintaining the
BBC iPlayer service.

Once again thank you for contacting BBC iPlayer. If you have any further
enquires please do not hesitate to contact our team.

Regards

Usha

Licensing costs are much higher for "Real". This is likely a financial move.

RM streams are unaffected on BBC R1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5x, 6, 7 and Asian
Network. But the fact that WM streams for them are now open probably
presages the same move.
