John,
I am intrigued by your use of the iPod Touch. I don't have one yet (I don't
even have any of the MP3 or iPod-type players, although my kids have such
toys), but it strikes me as a useful approach, especially if matched with a
iHome-type device as the bedside clock radio. I was aware of the Public Radio
app (and it turns out the three major public radio stations and networks I
listen to are participating). But I can't get a good answer trying to research
the BBC iPlayer app for the iPhone and iPod Touch.

So, does the iPlayer app allow U.S. "listeners" to stream Radio 4 and the World
Service via a WiFi connection?

If so, this might be my option to get the WorldService while falling asleep at
night, or while sitting in various rooms within range of my WiFi B connection.
I am honestly a neophyte when it comes to most of what you guys are talking
about on this distribution list, as I don't even have my first internet radio
appliance yet, nor any major use of podcasts or music with computer or MP3
devices.
