...and that's why the "NPR One" app for smartphones is interesting --
when you begin a listening session, the first thing that plays is the
most-recent hourly news update, then the series of stories / podcasts
/ programs.

For most folks, I suspect that "Tivoing" content is now much more
common than "VCRing" content, and, specifically for folks younger than
40, much (if not most) TV watching is of "Tivoed" content or other
content available via Netflix / Hulu / Amazon Prime. A relatively new
term in our vocabulary is "binge watching".

This means that NPR must play to these new consumption habits while
not totally alienating the radio stations that cough up the dough to
pay for the programming.

Over in the swlfest group, the kvetching has been more the content of
NPR's flagship shows (ATC, Morning Edition) than how they go to air.
The challenges for NPR will be to figure out how to satisfy the
podcast / on-demand audience, which tends to want a longer-form
storytelling versus someone who's listening during a morning commute
or while preparing breakfast / dinner.

Of course, part of all this is the fact that the developed world's
demands and interests run counter to the needs of emerging economies
(think India, China, Vietnam) or the less-developed Southern
Hemisphere. Clearly one paradigm doesn't fit all.

And that's why I tend to think of the content discussion separate from
the delivery platform discussion...
