Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that
allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift
of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion.

I do it while “power walking” (most) every other day. The “art” of putting one
foot in front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by “podding along”
while I’m plodding along my mind gets something to do along with my body. Some
of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia, Ireland,
Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s web
site, most programs are made available through any number of other amalgamation
sources such as iTunes and TuneIn. Here’s another in a continuing series of
small samplings:

"Emergency in the Sim Ward"
SOUNDPROOF - ABC Radio National
A creative narrative based on actual clinical re-enactments and interviews with
real life anaesthetists talking about their reactions and thought processes in
dealing with emergencies in an operating theatre. It's a unique insight made
possible through the medium of simulation—a process whereby clinicians review
their skills and medical protocols, simulating real life emergencies with the
use of mannequins and, occasionally, live actors. The simulation ward is a
place where fiction and real life collide. The patient may not be real but the
emotions are. Through these simulations we are transported into the stressful
environment of an emergency ward, where the internal doubts and anxieties
facing clinicians run wild. Their candid reflections provide insight into the
enormous dedication and tenacity required to do the work they do. It's not easy
work, and sometimes things do go wrong… (55”)

CAPSULE REVIEW
SOUNDPROOF/ABC Radio National
The program’s web page says it best. "Soundproof takes long and short form
creative audio, pushes beyond all genres and creates a space where voice, sound
and music fuse together. Bend the rules with Soundproof—art for your ears.”
There are painfully few radio programs that utilize stereo’s sonic qualities to
their fullest. Soundproof treats sound as an art form in itself. It is
recommended that the listener use headphones or a very good stereo system in a
quiet room to experience these “soundscapes” and audio artworks. This is a
truly unique program, an experience that can only be witnessed through the
medium of sound — radio.
