Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion. I do it while “power walking” (most) every other day. The “art” of putting one foot in front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by “podding along” while I’m plodding along my mind gets something to do along with my body. Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s web site, most programs are made available through any number of other amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn. Here’s another in a continuing series of small samplings:
—— “Rise of the Machines: The Lost History of Cybernetics; Gough’s Res Publica” LATE NIGHT LIVE - ABC Radio National Cyberspace, cyber attacks, cyber war are all now familiar terms in media discussions of computer technology and how it shapes our daily lives. Thomas Rid’s "Rise of the Machines, the Lost History of Cybernetics" sets out to ask, “What does 'cyber' even mean? And where does the idea come from?” “Gough Whitlam was interested not just in persuading us, but in asking us to share a vision and help build a political imagination,” according to Professor Anna Yeatman of the Whitlam Institute. Whitlam was a master of political rhetoric. And Professor Yeatman believes rhetoric is more than the art of using language, you need a coherent political vision. But if you dig a little deeper, there’s a hidden world beneath your feet as busy and complicated as a city at rush hour. In this story, a dog introduces us to a strange creature that burrows beneath forests, building an underground network where deals are made and lives are saved (and lost) in a complex web of friendships, rivalries, and business relations. It’s a network that scientists are only just beginning to untangle and map, and it’s not only turning our understanding of forests upside down, it’s leading some researchers to rethink what it means to be intelligent.
