Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion. I do it while “power walking” (most) every other day. The “art” of putting one foot in front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by “podding along” while I’m plodding along my mind gets something to do along with my body. Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s web site, most programs are made available through any number of other amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn. Here’s another in a continuing series of small samplings:
—— “Lionel Shriver on free speech, identity and the future of the US.” BIG IDEAS - ABC Radio National In the future United States of Lionel Shriver’s imagination, the nation is virtually bankrupt by the year 2029. The US dollar is worthless. Gold is confiscated by the government. A cabbage costs more than 20 dollars. This is the dystopian future she presents in her speculative novel, "The Mandibles". Lionel Shriver recently delivered a provocative speech at the Brisbane Writers Festival, ridiculing the concept of cultural appropriation. In this wide ranging conversation, she talks to Paul Barclay about free speech, identity, the future of America and how it’s governed, as well as Donald Trump and Hilary Clinton. O’Rourke” BIG IDEAS - ABC Radio National Humorist and best selling writer, PJ O'Rourke is in Sydney to deliver his Dangerous State of the Nation talk. Fresh from two conventions, O'Rourke takes a rollicking ride across the US political landscape and makes a first hand assessment of the candidates hoping to make it to the White House in 2017. PJ is in conversation with Tom Switzer. Highlights of PJ O'Rourke's Dangerous State of the Nation talk and part of the 40th anniversary Lighthouse Lecture Series hosted by the Sydney Opera House and The Centre for Independent Studies, 9 August 2016.
