Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that
allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift
of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion.

I do it while “power walking” (most) every other day (when it’s not cold and
wet or I haven’t succumbed to laziness). The “art” of putting one foot in
front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by “podding along” while
plodding along the mind also gets something useful to do.

Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia,
Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s
web site, most programs are made available through any number of other
amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn.

Admittedly, these are thoroughly subjective recommendations, but my interests
and tolerance for incompatible views are pretty wide-ranging. Here’s another in
a continuing series of small samplings:

“What Went Right in 2016?”
THE INQUIRY - BBC World Service
A lot went wrong last year. We are not talking about Brexit or the election of
Donald Trump – both of which split opinion in Britain and the US. We are
talking about terror attacks, the brutal conflict in Syria, and the thousands
of migrants who died trying to reach Europe. Good things did happen. But the
good news was mostly buried under the bad. So we wanted to find about four
things that went right in 2016. And, we talked to the people who made those
things happen. Four amazing stories united by one thing - the ambition of a
small number of extraordinary people to achieve the seemingly impossible. (23”)

“Late-Night Icon David Letterman and Songwriter Jason Isbell”
THE NEW YORKER RADIO HOUR - WNYC New York Public Radio
David Letterman talks with The New Yorker’s Susan Morrison about how he’s
spending his retirement avoiding late-night television and tackling climate
change. And Grammy Award-winning songwriter Jason Isbell talks to John Seabrook
about the joys of writing, performing, and living without alcohol. (58”)
