Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that
allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift
of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion.
I do it while “power walking” (most) every other day (when it’s not cold and
wet or I haven’t succumbed to laziness). The “art” of putting one foot in
front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by “podding along” while
plodding along the mind also gets something useful to do.

Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia,
Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s
web site, most programs are made available through any number of other
amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn.

Admittedly, these are thoroughly subjective recommendations, but my interests
and tolerance for incompatible views are pretty wide-ranging. Here’s another in
a continuing series of small samplings:

“The Radio Lab'”
RADIOLAB - WNYC New York Public Radio
15 years ago the very first episode of Radiolab, fittingly called "Firsts," hit
the airwaves. It was a 3-hour long collection of documentaries and musings
produced by a solitary sleep-deprived producer named Jad Abumrad. Things have
changed a bit since then. Today, with help from our long time Executive
Producer Ellen Horne, we celebrate our 15th birthday by surprising Jad and
Robert in the studio and forcing them to look back on a time when “Radiolab”
was just that: a lab for experimenting with radio. (42”)

“High Rise Living”
REAR VISION - ABC Radio National
While the Grenfell fire has put the spotlight on the potential risks of living
in an apartment tower, as cities grow, more and more of us are living in
high-rise buildings. When and why did this trend begin? How did high-rise
living fit in with evolving ideas about the city and what lessons were learned
along the way? (30”)
