Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that
allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift
of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion.
I do it while “power walking” (most) every other day (when it’s not cold and
wet or I haven’t succumbed to laziness). The “art” of putting one foot in
front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by “podding along” while
plodding along the mind also gets something useful to do.

Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia,
Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s
web site, most programs are made available through any number of other
amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn.

Admittedly, these are thoroughly subjective recommendations, but my interests
and tolerance for incompatible views are pretty wide-ranging. Here’s another in
a continuing series of small samplings:

"Is it a peace action or a desecration? Charlie Gard: Whose right to decide?
Should men be penalised for buying sex? Europe and refugees: A humanitarian
response or immigration control?"
THE RELIGION AND ETHICS REPORT - ABC RN (Radio National)
They've been called religious fanatics, but members of the Catholic Worker
movement who removed a sword from a Cross of Sacrifice war memorial, say they
were shocked by Christian betrayal of the non-violent message of Jesus.
British parents Connie Yates and Chris Gard faced an agonising choice none of
us would want to make. A private members' bill targeting men who go to
prostitutes in Israel is gathering political support. Will the future be
different in the Holy Land for sex workers? Despite tightening laws on
immigration, thousands of new refugees cross the Mediterranean desperate to get
to Germany and Sweden. (35”)

“Islam in the Philippines”
REAR VISION - ABC RN (Radio National)
For a month the city of Marwari, in the Philippines, has been occupied by
Islamic militants associated with ISIS. But this kind of conflict is nothing
new for centuries the Muslims, in what is today the Philippines, have been
fighting for their independence. First against the Spanish, then the Americans
and since 1946 the Christian Philippine government. The story of Islam in the
Philippines. (29”)

“Investigative Journalism: From NZ Wars to Pike River”
MEDIAWATCH - RNZ National
It's often been said there are just seven stories in all of literature. If a
new collection of a 150 years of investigative journalism in New Zealand ("A
Moral Truth: 150 years of investigative journalism in New Zealand") is any
guide investigative journalism has even fewer. (40”)
