Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that
allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift
of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion.
I do it while “power walking” (most) every other day (when it’s not cold and
wet or I haven’t succumbed to laziness). The “art” of putting one foot in
front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by “podding along” while
plodding along the mind also gets something useful to do.

Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia,
Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s
web site, most programs are made available through any number of other
amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn.

Admittedly, these are thoroughly subjective recommendations, but my interests
and tolerance for incompatible views are pretty wide-ranging. Here’s another in
a continuing series of small samplings, offered in a 90 minute scope (more of
less):

——

“The Good Friday Agreement”
THE HISTORY HOUR - BBC World Service
In 1998, the political parties in Northern Ireland reached a peace agreement
that ended decades of war. We hear from Paul Murphy, the junior minister for
Northern Ireland at the time. Plus, a cross-communitychoir in Bosnia and women
pioneers from the worlds of finance and oceanography. (51”)

“Catching up with the Jetsons: cities in 2050”
FUTURE TENSE - ABC RN
Fifty-four percent of the world’s population currently live in urban areasand
according to the UN, by 2050 that percentage will increase to around 66
percent. The urban population of the world at the mid-point of this century is
expected to be close to six-and-a-half billion people. So what will future
cities look like? How will they function and—importantly—how do we keep them
focussed on human need? This panel session was recorded at the World Science
Festival, Brisbane. Original broadcast was on 3 April 2016. (29”)
