Happy Holidays! Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion. I do it while “power walking” (most) every morning. The act of putting one foot in front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by “podding along” while plodding along the mind also gets something useful to do.
Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia, Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s web site, most programs are made available through any number of other amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn. Admittedly, these are thoroughly subjective recommendations, but my interests and tolerance for incompatible views are pretty wide-ranging. Here’s another in a continuing series of small samplings, offered in a 90 minute scope (more of less): —— “Jason Reitman - ‘The Frontrunner’" Q: THE PODCAST - CBC Radio One Jason Reitman's new film The Front Runner tells the story of Senator Gary Hart, who had a scandal bring down his presidential candidacy in 1988. Young, handsome and charismatic, Hart was widely tipped to be the next U.S. president, until reports of an affair derailed his campaign. But The Front Runner isn't just historical drama, it also sheds light on the present moment in politics and how scandal has almost become routine. It asks questions about morality in both the political world and the media, and challenges us to think about what it is we want to know about our politicians. Reitman sat down with q's Tom Power at the Toronto International Film Festival to talk why he wanted to revisit this story in 2018, and what it says about morality in politics and the media both then and now. The Front Runner hits theatres on Friday, November 16.
