Happy New Year!

Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that
allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift
of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion.
I do it while “power walking” (most) every morning. The act of putting one
foot in front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by “podding along”
while plodding along the mind also gets something useful to do.

Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia,
Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s
web site, most programs are made available through any number of other
amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn.

Admittedly, these are thoroughly subjective recommendations, but my interests
and tolerance for incompatible views are pretty wide-ranging. Here’s another in
a continuing series of small samplings, offered in a 90 minute scope (more of
less):

“Patent Deception”
PLANET MONEY - NPR
World Patent Marketing's pitch to inventors was simple: Pay us lots of money,
and we'll take care of the complicated patent office details. Hundreds of
tinkerers and would-be visionaries took this deal. After all, the patent
system is complicated. Marketing is tricky. It can be hard to find factories.
But, for new inventors, it's hard to tell a legitimate service from a scam. It
was especially hard to tell with World Patent Marketing, which boasted an
advisory board that included Acting Attorney General Matthew Whitaker. (22”)

“Playing Around”
THE PHILOSOPHER’S ZONE - ABC RN
What happens when we play video games? Lots of things: we frown in
concentration, we mash buttons, we zone into an imaginary world. But according
to this week's guest, we also engage philosophically with issues of ethics,
identity and more. This makes video games potentially useful as a classroom
learning tool — but what about all that violence? (26”)

“Revolutions: Radio”
THE MEDIA SHOW - BBC Radio 4
As part of our series of audience events exploring the media revolution, how
the radio industry is being disrupted by new technology. From podcasts to music
streaming, the choice of what to listen to has never been greater - but where
will the revolution go next? Amol Rajan is joined in the BBC Radio Theatre by
Scott Taunton, CEO Wireless Group, Gill Hind, Enders Analysis, Helen Zaltzman,
The Allusionist, and Helen Thorn, Scummy Mummies. (29”)
