Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that
allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift
of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion.
I do it while “power walking” (most) every morning. The act of putting one
foot in front of the other can be pretty monotonous and by “podding along”
while plodding along the mind also gets something useful to do. So it is with
the time spent commuting to work day after day.

Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia,
Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s
web site, most programs are made available through any number of other
amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn.

Admittedly, these are thoroughly subjective recommendations, but my interests
and tolerance for incompatible views are pretty wide-ranging. Here’s another in
a continuing series of small samplings, offered in a 90 minute scope (more of
less):

“Opportunity America and the Library of Ice”
EXTRA - ABC RN
Some of America’s think tanks are bravely crossing the ideological divide, and
working together to come up with what they hope will be some innovative policy
solutions.
‘Opportunity America’, a small centre right think tank which focusses on
economic mobility, has convened a report on policies for America's working
class, bringing together researchers from Brookings and the American Enterprise
Institute. (26”)

“My Favorite Martian"
EARSHOT - ABC RN
Meet Dianne McGrath, astronaut candidate with the Mars One space program. Mars
One is a bold, world wide project to land humans on Mars sometime in the next
14 years. The idea is to set up a colony permanent there. When the idea was
first launched there were over 200,000 applicants. That number is now down to
100, but only 40 will make the one-way trip. Dianne hopes to be one of them.
But the question is why? She loves Earth, but is there a chance she loves Mars
more?. (29”)

"The Human and the Posthuman”
THE DRAWING ROOM - ABC RN
Technology has changed how people navigate the world, and their relationships
with each other. And that experience itself is constantly changing. Recent
news about Facebook and Cambridge Analytica has sparked a significant public
conversation about the way social media is used. But when the experience of
the world is constantly mediated by technology, what does it mean to be human?
Rosi Braidotti presented the Thinking Out Loud lectures organized by the
Philosophy group at Western Sydney University in collaboration with ABC RN.
