Most radio listening takes place in the car or while doing other things that
allow freedom for the ear, but not the eyes and hands. Podcasts permit a shift
of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion.
I do it while “power walking” (most) every morning in what sometimes seems like
a vain attempt to diminish the results of sitting behind a desk for 35 years.
The act of putting one foot in front of the other can be pretty monotonous and
by “podding along” while plodding along the mind also gets something useful to
do. So it is with the time spent commuting to work day after day.

Podcasting has expanded almost exponentially so very quickly that it can justly
be considered a medium all its own. Therefore, the attempt here has to be to
highlight only a small portion of it, just one corner where excellence reigns.

Some of the best radio comes from the public networks of the UK, Australia,
Ireland, Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. Apart from the originating program’s
web site, most programs are made available through any number of other
amalgamation sources such as iTunes and TuneIn.

Admittedly, these are thoroughly subjective recommendations, but my interests
and tolerance for incompatible views are pretty wide-ranging. Here’s another in
a continuing series of small samplings, offered in a 90 minute scope (more or
less):

“Who's profiting from the pandemic?"
BACKGROUND BRIEFING - ABC RN
The coronavirus pandemic is causing pain and suffering the world over, but then
there are always those who never let a good crisis go to waste. Some are
benefiting from COVID-19 for legitimate reasons: just think of companies that
make video conferencing apps, ventilators, or canny investors. But there are
also more nefarious players looking to bank a win off the back of coronavirus
fear and confusion: scam artists, fraudsters, counterfeiters. This week, Geoff
Thompson, Mario Christodoulou, Meghna Bali and Kat Gregory investigate who's
winning in these turbulent times and how. (42”)

“Economics of coronavirus recovery, and Alexander Downer on China"
BETWEEN THE LINES - ABC RN
How do we revive the economy once the pandemic passes? Coronavirus has
Australia headed for a deep recession, so what can we do now to plan our way
out of it? Is the answer more government intervention and state planning? Or,
is now the time to launch a new reform agenda that sharpens the incentives to
work, save, invest and hire? Guests: Michael Stutchbury, Editor in Chief, The
Australian Financial Review; Ben Oquist, Executive Director, The Australia
Institute. Also, Alexander Downer: “I don’t know what China’s problem is.”
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called for an investigation into the origins
of the virus. But China’s Ambassador in Canberra upped the stakes this week by
threatening a trade and tourism boycott of Australia. Australia’s longest
serving Foreign Minister, Alexander Downer says China’s Cold War style rhetoric
will backfire on it, and it is in everyone’s interests to investigate the
origins of the virus. But as we head into recession, can we afford to aggravate
our largest trade partner? Guest: Alexander Downer, Foreign Minister
1996-2007. (29”)
