Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually
any convenient occasion. I do it while taking my daily (more or less) 3 mile
walk, while I’m “plodding along”.

While there are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of great podcasts from
other sources, the ones sponsored via public radio have been vetted through the
worthy objectives of the medium.

Here’s what I’ve been listening to recently. I hope you might find these
suggestions — in roughly 90 minute bites -- helpful in enhancing your own
enjoyment of radio, our favorite medium.

“Extremism has always been part of mainstream America: historian”
IDEAS - CBC Radio One
"This is the hardest lecture I've ever given."
That's how historian Leonard Moore described his final lecture at McGill
University in Montreal, where he taught popular — and powerful — courses on
American history for more than 30 years.
The topic of his final lecture was, as Moore put it, "the really difficult
present." He spoke about the deep polarization in the United States, his home
country, and the sense that for him and many other experts, the upcoming
election between President Joe Biden and former president Donald Trump may be
the most pivotal in U.S. history.
It was an emotional farewell to teaching, featuring insights and anxieties
about where the United States may be headed, and was attended by members of the
public and friends, family and generations of former students. (54”)

“Neofeudalism: techno-lords and peasants”
THE PHILOSOPHERS ZONE - ABC RN (Radio National)
For many on the political left, the end of capitalism is a cherished ideal -
but what if capitalism ended and we found ourselves with something worse? This
week we're exploring the possibility that Western liberal democracies could be
sliding in the direction of "neofeudalism" and devolving into a much nastier
set of economic and social structures than the ones we presently have.
Guest: Francis Russell, Lecturer in Humanities, Curtin University, Perth WA
