Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually
any convenient occasion. I do it while taking my daily (more or less) 3 mile
walk, while I’m “plodding along”.

While there are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of great podcasts from
other sources, the ones sponsored via public radio have been vetted through the
worthy objectives of the medium.

Here’s what I’ve been listening to recently. I hope you might find these
suggestions — in roughly 90 minute bites (225 minutes this one time) --
helpful in enhancing your own enjoyment of radio, our favorite medium.

“The Common Thread (The Bra)”
RTE DOCUMENTARY - RTE Radio One
2024 marks the 110th year of the brassiere.. From the Backless to the Bullet,
the Demi-cup to the Push-up, the brassiere has evolved from a simple breast

caress our way through its history. (40”)

“Amitava Kumar on India, the U.S. and the indelible imprint of the immigrant
experience”
WRITERS AND COMPANY - CBC Radio One
[Ed. Note: As Writers & Company wraps up after a remarkable 33-year run, it is
revisiting episodes selected from the show's archive.]
Amitava Kumar's writing often explores immigrant life and the feelings of
guilt, loss and discovery that can come with relocating. Blending fiction and
autobiography, his novel 'Immigrant, Montana' is a coming-of-age story about a
young Indian man who goes to the United States for graduate school and engages
in a series of failed romantic relationships. It's an exploration of home,
memory and desire, the thirst for knowledge and the pursuit of love.
Born in 1963, Amitava Kumar grew up in the Indian city of Patna. His nonfiction
writing includes a short 'biography' of his hometown, 'A Matter of Rats'; and
his essay collections 'Husband of a Fanatic: A Personal Journey Through India,
Pakistan, Love, and Hate' and 'Lunch with a Bigot: The Writer in the World.'
His latest novel, 'My Beloved Life', was released in 2024 and traces the life
of one man as he loves, loses and grows over time.
Kumar talked to Eleanor Wachtel from Vassar College in 2018, where he's a
professor of creative writing, journalism and literature. (53”)
