Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually
any convenient occasion. I do it while taking my daily (more or less) 3 mile
walk, while I’m “plodding along”.

While there are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of great podcasts from
other sources, the ones sponsored via public radio have been vetted through the
worthy objectives of the medium.

Here’s what I’ve been listening to recently. I hope you might find these
suggestions — in roughly 90 minute bites -- helpful in enhancing your own
enjoyment of radio, our favorite medium.

“Do Sex Scandals Matter Anymore in Politics?”
ON THE MEDIA - NPR and WNYC
With Trump's imminent return to the White House, we've decided to take stock of
how political and journalistic norms have evolved over the years. For this
week's midweek podcast, we're sharing an episode from Radiolab that aired in
October, on the whirlwind history of Gary Hart, a young charismatic Democrat
who in 1987 was poised to win his party's nomination and possibly the
presidency – until a bombshell sex scandal derailed it all. Brooke Gladstone
and Radiolab co-host Latif Nasser discuss that history, and why sex scandals
don't really matter anymore. (44”)

“Who Gets to Write History?”
BIG IDEAS - ABC Radio National
To write history is to omit. The historical archive is the end-product of a
series of choices, and in the wash, particular voices get privileged over
others. But around the globe, historians are attempting to identify the gaps in
'official' history, and in so doing, understand how and why they were created.
Santilla Chingaipe is among them. Her recent work has told the stories of the
hundreds of convicts of African descent transported to Australia during
colonial rule. In her 2023 EW Cole Lecture for the Wheeler Centre, Santilla
asks the question: Who gets to write history? (53”)
