Podcasts permit a shift of listening time from a set appointment to virtually any convenient occasion. I do it while taking my daily (more or less) 3 mile walk, while I’m “plodding along”.
While there are thousands, perhaps tens of thousands, of great podcasts from other sources, the ones sponsored via public radio have been vetted through the worthy objectives of the medium. Here’s what I’ve been listening to recently. I hope you might find these suggestions — in roughly 90 minute bites -- helpful in enhancing your own enjoyment of radio, our favorite medium. __ __ “Air conditioning: keeping us cool but making the planet hotter” FUTURE TENSE - ABC Radio National Around two billion air conditioners are currently in use across the globe and it's estimated they account for more than ten per cent of global electricity demand. There’s also a problem with the coolants they use. So, if finding better ways to cool our homes and offices is an imperative, what are the alternatives? Guests: Dr Aaswath Raman – Assistant professor of Engineering, UCLA; Kristen Taddonio – Senior Climate and Energy Advisor, Institute for Governance and Sustainable Development (US); Brian Motherway – Head of the Energy Efficiency Division, International Energy Agency; Dr Sandra Piesik – Architect and author. We also hear about a refrigeration initiative in Rwanda that could help increase food nutrition levels in the developing world and significantly cut food wastage. Guests: Toby Peters – Professor in Cold Economy, University of Birmingham; Philip Pardey – Professor of Science and Technology Policy, University of Minnesota; Dr Monika Zurek – Senior Researcher, Environmental Change Institute, University of Oxford; Carol Richards – Associate Professor in sustainable food systems, Queensland University of Technology. FUTURE TENSE - ABC Radio National Data breaches are on the rise, and it seems social media is a growing point of vulnerability. The consequences aren’t just financial, in some cases lives are at risk. People are also becoming increasingly wary about corporations gathering their personal data - as seen by the fate of Google's envisaged futuristic smart city development in Toronto. Guests: David Hope – Senior Vice President, Australia and Japan, ForgeRock; Larry Ponemon – Chairman, Ponemon Institute; Eileen Guo – Senior Reporter, MIT Technology Review; Karrie Jacobs – writer, blogger, The Itinerant Urbanist; Justin Hendry – Editor, Innovationaus.com <http://innovationaus.com/>.
