Call for Papers Theme: Exchange Type: Postgraduate Interdisciplinary Conference Institution: University Graduate College, Cardiff University Location: Cardiff, Wales (United Kingdom) Date: 28.–29.6.2012 Deadline: 4.5.2012 __________________________________________________ This two day conference, organised by and for research students (with support from University Graduate College staff), encourages doctoral researchers to consider how a particular theme may come to bear on their own subjects of research. The approach allows participation by students from many humanities and social science disciplines, and provides a framework for interdisciplinary cross-fertilisation. The event attracts doctoral students - both as speakers and delegates - from departments and institutions across Wales, the UK and overseas. The event enables research students to: - present their work in a supportive environment and receive feedback - broaden their perspective on their research and establish links with students from various institutions - gain insight into cross-disciplinary comparisons of different methodologies applied to the same research questions - develop confidence and ability to present research and deal with questions Theme The 2012 conference will be exploring the concept of ‘Exchange’ and will gather a broad range of perspectives from a many different fields and disciplines. As well as being the conference theme, ‘exchange’ will also reflect the many opportunities for conversations, networking and the cross-fertilisation of ideas that is possible at the event. Presentations may connect to the concept of exchange through the focus of the research or perhaps in the theoretical or methodological approach being used. In each case, the presentation could look to the present, draw on the past or consider possibilities for the future. Potential areas of interest could include explorations of exchange in the context of: - Knowledge or research: Innovation, creativity, learning, communication - Attitudes or approaches: Reciprocity, sharing, convergence, dialogue - Psychology, language and behaviour: Meaning, identity, boundaries, relationships - Media or culture: Arts, music, literature, technology - Business or the economy: Globalism, trade, finance, enterprise - Philosophy, politics or religion: Ideas, trends, movements - Geography or society: Globalisation, migration, networks, social capital Submissions Doctoral researchers from across the humanities and social sciences are invited to participate in this conference that explores the concept of exchange. By gathering a broad range of perspectives the conference aims to stimulate interdisciplinary thinking and help to build new networks between researchers. In each case, the presentation could look to the present, draw on the past or consider possibilities for the future. The conference committee welcomes abstracts from those at all stages of their PhD (including those in the early stages who may wish to communicate their findings so far as well as their future direction). To submit a paper for consideration, send a 200 word abstract and include your contact details and a brief biographical note along with a conference booking form available to download at the top right hand side of this page. Your abstract should provide a clear and concise overview of your presentation. You can either introduce your research project as a whole, giving an overview of what you are doing and why, or you can present a specific part of your research in more detail. In either case, you should explain its significance to your field. The length of each talk will be 20 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for questions. Remember that you are likely to be presenting your research to people outside your field so your abstract (and your talk) should reflect this. Speakers will be chosen based on the abstracts submitted and how they relate to ‘exchange’ as the overall theme of the conference. Presentations will then be grouped into panels that express one or more sub-themes. Submissions by 5pm Friday 4 May 2012 to: [email protected] You will be informed via email approximately two weeks after the deadline as to whether or not your abstract has been accepted.
