Call for Applications Theme: Culture, Rights, Identity Subtitle: Interfaces between the Humanities and the Law Type: 4th Annual International Summer Institute on the Cultural Study of the Law Institution: Institute of English and American Studies, University of Osnabrück Location: Osnabrück (Germany) Date: 6.–18.8.2012 Deadline: 30.4.2012 __________________________________________________ The fourth annual International Summer Institute on the Cultural Study of the Law will be held from August 6 to 18, 2012 at the University of Osnabrück, Germany. Hosted by the Institute of English and American Studies (IfAA), the Summer Institute seeks to bring together advanced graduate, doctoral, and postdoctoral students of the humanities and/or the law from around the world to promote and examine the interdisciplinary study and research of law and culture. Workshops The Summer Institue offers a total of four workshops: 1. The Complex Relation between Culture and Law: Methods, Concepts, Approaches 2. From Human Rights to Civil Rights to Cultural Rights: Rights Talk in Transatlantic and Global Perspective 3. Law, Rights and Cultural Fictions of Justice 4. Heritage, Resource, Creativity: The Proprieties of Cultural Property The schedule will be arranged so that all students can participate in all workshops. The first workshop, which also serves as platform for presentations, is especially designed to bring together all participants in order to establish a common framework of reference. However, we ask all applicants to chose another workshop as priority in order to achieve a proportionate distribution in each of the remaining three workshops. This priority workshop should be chosen on the grounds of the particular needs of the student’s current dissertation or research project. Each workshop will be conducted by a team of specialists from the summer school’s international faculty. Eligibility The Summer Institute aims at advanced graduate, doctoral and postdoctoral students from various academic fields, whose research interests and projects are situated at the interface between law and the humanities and who are concerned with a better understanding of the interdependence of law and culture. Even though the school strongly invites students from a broad variety of disciplines and academic backgrounds, it focuses almost exclusively on questions and issues related to research done in the humanities and legal studies. Doctoral candidates in literature, the law, the arts, the humanities, and the related social sciences are invited to apply, as are advanced students pursuing a J.D. or its equivalent (such as the L.L.B). Young scholars or junior faculty members who have received a Ph.D. or corresponding degree in the last five years are also eligible. While applications by doctoral/post-doctoral students are prioritized, the Summer Institute also encourages applications from advanced Master students about to conclude their studies and with a strong interest in interdisciplinary research. There are openings for approximately 30 students to participate in the Summer Institute. Due to its international audience, the Summer Institute will be completely conducted in English. It does not offer language instruction classes, either in German or in English. Tuition and Financial Aid The full fee for the twelve-day Summer Institute, inclusive of registration, tuition, course material, housing in student accommodation for twelve nights, breakfast during the week, as well as an insurance package and a cost-reduced meal plan is 600 Euros. Financial aid is available in form of a limited number of full or partial tuition waivers and travel scholarships available for particularly qualified students. Moreover, the Institute is always negotiating funding resources from third-party sponsors in order to make full scholarships available. As soon as new funds become available, all applicants will be notified and we will post the dedails on our pages. If you need to request financial aid, please submit a short explanation at the end of your statement of purpose (see below for application instructions). All students who are seeking travel funds should complete their applications well in advance of the April 30 deadline. As the amount of financial aid and of travel scholarships is limited, the disbursement of financial support is competitive. Any financial aid will be announced shortly after the student’s acceptance. All applicants are strongly encouraged to seek funding from their home institutions. Applications Applicants should complete: - An application form, indicating the preferred workshop. - A statement of purpose no more than two pages long, describing current scholarly interests, previous research, and plans for how the Summer Institute would specifically further these interests and plans. - An up-to-date curriculum vitae. Applications will be considered until the closing date of April 30. All application materials must be received before this date in order to be eligible for financial aid. Decisions about acceptance and any financial aid awards will be made by the end of May. Further information regarding the payment of Summer Institute tuition and accommodation details will be included in the acceptance letter. Questions about the Institute may be directed to any of the Summer Institute Coordinators via email.
