"In the Footsteps of the Chinese Philosophers"
A revealing journey to the native lands
of the great Chinese thinkers
30 May - 15 June 2005

 
A 15-day tour of the celebrated sites frequented by the
great Chinese philosophers including their places of origin,
academies and natural surroundings that inspired them. We
will furthermore visit two renowned Daoist sites of
interest: the White Cloud Temple in Beijing and A Daoist
hermitage at the peak of Mount Tai, as well as key places of
cultural interest including The Great Wall, Forbidden City
and the Summer Palace in Beijing.

During portions of the visit we will be accompanied by
leading experts in Chinese philosophy, with whom we will
conduct roundtable discussions in Qufu, the hometown of
Confucius and Hangzhou, near the hometown of Wang Yangming.

The tour will be arranged by CITS (China International
Travel Service), the leading agency of its kind, which only
arranges accommodation of high quality. The packages include
medical insurance, in-China travel, accommodations,
approximately 50% of meals (during the tours and visits
mentioned on the schedule), visas, English-speaking tour
guide services and entrance fees. The 3-Credit option
requirements include reading and written assignments, as
well as participation in round table discussions. Further
details, including prerequisites, will be sent to
applicants.

Dr. Mark K. Setton, Program Director, earned his doctorate
in Oriental Studies at Oxford. An internationally recognized
scholar of East Asian Confucianism, Dr. Setton has been a
Visiting Professor at Harvard and at the University of
California at Berkeley. He has published numerous
contributions on Chinese and Korean thought in encyclopedias
and journals. His book, Chong Yangong: Korea's Challenge to
Orthodox Neo-Confucianism (SUNY PRESS 1997), pioneers a new
area of academic inquiry in the West. Dr. Setton teaches
Confucianism, Daoism, Philosophy of Religion, and East Asian
political philosophy in the International Colleg at the
University of Bridgeport.
