The Department of Religion, Faculty of Arts, at the University of Manitoba invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment in Buddhism at the rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. by the time of appointment, with demonstrated notable success in both teaching and research. We seek an outstanding teacher conversant with theoretical and methodological innovations in the study of Buddhism. The successful candidate will also have a strong research interest and be prepared to develop and/or maintain a program of further research in the area of specialization. Competence in the relevant research languages is essential. The appointment will begin on 1 July 2006. Duties will include teaching of a range of undergraduate world religions courses and courses in South Asian, Tibetan, and Zen Buddhism, and Buddhism in the West; teaching of graduate courses and supervision of graduate students theses in Buddhism, South Asian, Southeast Asian, or East Asian; service to the Department, Faculty, and University. Starting salary will reflect the qualifications and experience of the chosen candidate. The successful candidate will join Manitobas largest and only research-intensive post-secondary educational institution, which annually enrolls some 25,000 undergraduate students and 3,000 graduate students. Within the Faculty of Arts, which includes 8 humanities departments, 7 social science departments and 11 interdisciplinary programs, he or she will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with the Asian Studies Centre, which offers interdisciplinary undergraduate major and minor degrees in Asian Studies and language instruction in Mandarin, Japanese, Hindi-Urdu, and Sanskrit.
