Call for Papers "Freedom and Justice" 2006 International Conference Human Development and Capability Association Groningen (The Netherlands) 29 August - 1 September 2006 __________________________________________________ We kindly invite you to submit paper and/or session proposals for the 2006 International Conference of the Human Development and Capability Association, Groningen, The Netherlands, 29 August - 1 September 2006. Key-note speakers: Bina Agarwal, Martha Nussbaum, Sari Nusseibeh, Henry Richardson, Erik Schokkaert, Philippe Van Parijs CONFERENCE THEME: FREEDOM AND JUSTICE The relationship between freedom and social justice has long been a fundamental issue in economic and political thought. Understanding this relationship requires studying the connections among freedom, equality, human diversity, democracy, human development, poverty and welfare. This conference sets out to explore the broad theme of freedom and justice, including the contribution of the capability approach to its understanding. Fundamental issues to be addressed include the nature of social justice, the political implications of expanding freedom and justice, the mechanisms of political inclusion and exclusion, poverty and development, the cultural embeddedness of individual freedom and its consequences for the realization of social justice, and potential tensions among different kinds of freedoms. AIM OF THE CONFERENCE Fundamental advances in the study of justice and freedom as well as critiques of existing approaches are welcomed. Scholars from various fields as well as policy makers and practitioners are invited to examine these issues from diverse perspectives (conceptual analysis, normative theory, social choice theory, policy analysis, empirical research) so as to contribute to a fruitful interdisciplinary exchange of ideas. Sessions will be organized on issues such as inequality, gender and intra-household distribution, sustainable development, poverty in all of its dimensions, formal and informal institutions, health and education, foundational philosophical problems, theoretical issues and technical matters in operationalising the capability approach. Theoretical papers and emprical papers covering the global South and/or North, are equally welcomed. SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS AND IMPORTANT DATES We invite you to send a proposal for a paper. Send an abstract of 200-400 words and up to five keywords, along with your name, affiliation, contact information and a short biography. Proposals for panels are also welcomed. A panel consists of four papers that will be presented at one session. A panel proposal should contain: 1. A title and a description of the theme of the panel (300-500 words) 2. Titles, authors and abstracts of the papers (each of 200-400 words) 3. Names, affiliations and short biographies of the proposed speakers 4. Name and contact information of the panel organizer (who need not be one of the proposed speakers) to be used for communication with the Conference Organization. There will be a limited number of fee reductions for students and scholars from developing countries. People who wish to be considered for financial assistance should indicate so in the submission of their proposal. The extended deadline for submission of paper and panel proposals is April 21st 2006 and full papers will be due on August 1st 2006. Notice of acceptance of session/paper proposals will be sent by the end of May 2006.
