The Latin American and Caribbean Studies Program at Stony
Brook University invites presentation proposals for its 6th
annual graduate student conference to be held on April 27
and 28, 2007 at the Stony Brook Manhattan Campus. We take
this year’s theme, “Dialogue and Borders,” as a starting
point for rethinking the social and geographic reality of
Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as the disciplinary
boundaries within and across which we come to terms with
that reality. Among the questions we ask are: How do borders
hinder or instigate dialogue? Is dialogue possible across
historical periods and cultural divides? Who sets the rules
of a dialogue? Has the creation of new academic disciplines
truly widened the scope of dialogue? How can we bridge the
divide between academic institutions and the population at
large?

In the spirit of opening dialogue and crossing borders, we
welcome submissions from all disciplines on any related
topic including but not restricted to:

Globalization and indigenous cultures
Trans-border relations
Citizenship
Race and gender identity
Intersections of local histories and global designs
Memory and truth-telling
Geo-politics
Linguistic borders and translation
Migration and labor
Wealth, poverty and development
Human rights
Philosophy and liberation
Technology and education
Social movements

Presentation proposals should be 1 to 2 pages in length, in
either Spanish or English, and should include a cover page
with name, academic affiliation and contact information.
Panel proposals and alternative, non-paper presentations
will also be given consideration.

Please submit your proposal electronically to:
[email protected]

Deadline: February 1, 2007

Keynote Speaker: Susan Besse (City College, CUNY)
