Abstract Deadline: January 30, 2007

Keynote Speaker: Oscar Marti, California State University,
Northridge; Current President of the Society for Iberian and
Latin American Thought

You are invited to participate in a two-day conference
honoring the life and work of Professor John Haddox. The
participants at the conference will speak from the many
areas of philosophy, scholarship, and social interests that
have characterized the generous spirit of John Haddox during
the 50 years of his service in philosophy at the University
of Texas at El Paso and on the border of the U.S. and Latin
America.

A principal focus of the event will be to highlight his
pioneering work begun more than 40 years ago in Latin
American Philosophy by helping to establish this field as a
distinct discipline of study. For example, his books on
Vasconcelos and Caso are still used as scholarly references
to their work and influence. Over his many years of working
as a philosopher, however, Haddox has passionately attended
to several other areas of social concern including Native
American Studies, Religious Existentialism, the Chicano
movement, peace activism, Latin American education theory,
the arts, international relations, and family and community
life.

Papers involving any of these areas will be considered
especially those that connect the work of Haddox with the
relevant issue. Proposals for papers written and presented
in Spanish will also be welcomed. In order to further
establish the legacy of Haddox we will be publishing a
Festschrift from this conference that will include
selections of the papers presented during the conference.
Additionally, the conference will also function as a
fundraising event in order to establish two permanent
scholarship funds supporting the work of students and
scholars in the Department of Philosophy at UTEP and to
initiate an endowed Chair in Latin American Philosophy, in
the name of John Haddox.

Please submit by email an abstract of 500 words by January
30, 2007 to Jules Simon.
