Call for Papers "Spirituality, Social Capital and Self Reliance in Africa" Global African Colloquium Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) Pan-African Strategic and Policy Research Group (PANAFSTRAG) L'Institut de Développement et d'Echanges Endogènes (IDEE) Ouidah (Benin) 4-9 November 2007 __________________________________________________ Spirituality and religion are central to human existence. The interface between the two is germane to engendering robust social capital with its implications for self-reliance. However, spirituality and religion are capable of being misunderstood if not properly defined and explained. Thus, the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization in line with its commitment to the promotion of global understanding of Black and African culture in conjunction with PANAFSTRAG, is organizing an international colloquium to stimulate and foster a common dialogue of faiths, by assembling scholars and practitioners with diverse research interests. The Conference will interrogate the interface of African Spirituality, Religious Tradition, Social Capital and Self-reliance with a view to achieving sustainable development for Africa and Africans in the Diaspora. Abstract of not more than 250 words are invited from scholars, religious leaders, philosophical organizations, traditionalists, practitioners and researchers in the following sub-themes: - Spirituality: Theoretical and Philosophical Foundations - Spirituality in Diplomacy and Conflicts - Legal and Judicial Processes - Government and Civil Administration - Arts, Crafts, Science and Technology - Commerce and Industry - Health Care Delivery System - New Religious Movements - Spirituality, Social Capital and Gender - Ecology and Environment - Music, Dance, Sports and Folklore - Family, Youth and Education - Media, Spirituality and Social Action - Spirituality, Poverty and Development - Religion, Spirituality and Social Capital - Religious Fundamentalism, Spirituality and Social Capital Workshops: 1. Spirituality: theoretical and conceptual perspectives 2. Historical and contemporary context 3. Social Capital, self-reliance and development 4. Identity, racism and conflicts 5. African values, ethics and the new order Instructions for submission Papers for the colloquium should reflect both the theme and the outline above. Papers are needed to present solution through centred research and implementation schemes designed to advance spiritual role in building social capital and within Africans and the Diaspora i.e. the Global African Community. To submit papers and topics for the panel discussions and workshops please send - one page abstract of your paper; - A 2 page concept paper of the topic with the names of panellists maximum of four names excluding the moderator; - A 2 page Concept Paper of the topics you want, a workshop to discuss. Please include a short CV with your abstract including those of panellists. The last day will be a Global African Spiritual day of Music, Prayers and Dance. The colloquium is open to black spiritual singers and musicians of all Religions for daily evening performance during the Conference from 8pm-10pm.
