"Orientations - Language, Learning and Translation:
Negotiating Cultural and Literary Spaces"

The Department of English Language and Translation, Faculty
of Social Sciences and Humanities announces a call for
research papers relating to these topics:

- Language learning and teaching
- Translation
- Identity, Politics and Language
- Philosophy of language
- Language - literature interface
- Discourse analysis
- Sociolinguistics
- Anthropological Linguistics
- Psycholinguistics
- Language Acquisition

Introduction
The astrolabe was a composite astronomical instrument used
to navigate the seas by Arabic and European sailors. It was
a tool which enabled cultures to meet, trade, share
knowledge, music and ideas. The theme of the conference,
Orientations, is intended to prompt participants into
reflecting on emergent theoretical tools and practical
approaches to language, learning and translation. Academics
are warmly invited to join us at Sohar University for our
first international Applied Linguistics conference to
discuss contemporary research and the directions this
research is taking us.

Through globalization and the rapid spread of Internet based
communication great distances between peoples have been
reduced and many borders have been torn down. Applied
linguistic theory has also moved with the times developing
new questions and answers relevant to our dynamic times.
Papers with a particular focus on using language as a tool
to connect cultures, share information or ideas between
cultures or investigate the disparity and inequalities
between cultures in the Arab world will be especially
appreciated.

Aims
1. Facilitate the exchange of ideas and information between
   academics working in the field of linguistics.
2. Assist academics strengthen their research through
   sharing their ideas and projects with other professionals
   and gaining critical feedback.
3. Develop new ideas, methods, concepts and questions
   pertinent to the language in the Arab world.
4. Draw attention to and publicize the work of academics for
   the wider community in the Gulf.

Language:
English, (Arabic papers in translation will also be
considered).

Mode:
Paper Presentation (20 min +15min questions)
Workshop  (40min)
Poster/Wallpaper

Submission Guidelines
All abstracts will be subjected to an academic committee
review made up of specialists from the above fields. After
careful review of abstracts the committee will contact
authors with accepted papers. Persons making submissions
shall not contact the committee during this process. Only
papers submitted before the deadline will be considered.
Following the conference all presented papers will be
published as conference proceedings.

About the conference venue
The City of Sohar is located in the costal Batina region of
the Sultanate of Oman, 200km north of the capital Muscat and
200 south-west of the city of Dubai in the United Arab
Emirates. Sohar’s natural environment includes stretches of
beaches on the Arabian sea fringed by lush tropical
farmlands and behind which stretch rugged desert landscapes.

Sohar University is a university of international standing
with an affiliation with the University of Queensland in
Brisbane, Australia. The conference is hosted by the English
Language and Translation Department (ELT), which has a
strong research tradition in Applied Linguistics, Literature
and TESOL.
