Rethinking Religion in India forms a five year international
conference cluster. It is jointly organised by the Research
Centre Vergelijkende Cultuurwetenschap (Ghent University),
the Centre for the Study of Local Cultures (Kuvempu
University) and the Karnataka Academy of Social Sciences and
Humanities (KASSH).

The overall objective is to develop an alternative
theoretical framework to understand the Indian religions and
traditions. During the 5-year conference cluster ten
conference themes will be addressed. A novel conference
format with three distinct modules will allow for in-depth
discussions. The first conference year will have a Platform,
addressing the question ‘Are there native religions in
India’; a Roundtable, taking up the issue of ‘Colonialism
and religion in India’ and three Parallel Paper sessions,
addressing 'Evolutionary explanations of religion', 'Indians
are Aryans, so what?' and 'The caste system and Indian
religion'.
