Conference Announcement "Rethinking Religion in India" International Conference Research Centre Vergelijkende Cultuurwetenschap, Ghent University Centre for the Study of Local Cultures, Kuvempu University Karnataka Academy of Social Sciences and Humanities (KASSH) Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts Dehli (India) 21-24 January 2008 __________________________________________________ Venue: Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts Delhi, India Rethinking Religion in India forms a five year international conference cluster. It is jointly organised by the Research Centre Vergelijkende Cultuurwetenschap (Ghent University), the Centre for the Study of Local Cultures (Kuvempu University) and the Karnataka Academy of Social Sciences and Humanities (KASSH). The overall objective is to develop an alternative theoretical framework to understand the Indian religions and traditions. During the 5-year conference cluster ten conference themes will be addressed. A novel conference format with three distinct modules will allow for in-depth discussions. The first conference year will have a Platform, addressing the question Are there native religions in India; a Roundtable, taking up the issue of Colonialism and religion in India and three Parallel Paper sessions, addressing 'Evolutionary explanations of religion', 'Indians are Aryans, so what?' and 'The caste system and Indian religion'.
