Call for Papers "Writing New Histories of Indigineity and Imperialism" Interdisciplinary Workshop Canada Research Chair on Western Canadian Social History, University of Manitoba Winnipeg, MN (Canada) 21-23 May 2008 __________________________________________________ Influenced by the remarkable growth of Aboriginal history in Canada, the increasing importance of post-colonial thought, the maturation of social history and the global development of the new imperial history including feminist histories of empire, historians are producing new histories of both Imperialism and Indigenous peoples. Writing New Histories of Indigineity and Imperialism: A Workshop will provide emergent scholars with an opportunity to collaborate with other scholars working in this field. It will be held at the University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, from May 21-23, 2008. Participants will be asked to provide a 15-25 page research paper and/or chapter in advance of the workshop, which will be shared and engaged with by the group in a seminar format with the goal of providing all participants with valuable new perspectives, mentorship and professional development. Participants will also go on field trips and work in various capacities with both emergent scholars and faculty. Core faculty at the workshop will include Sherry Farell-Racette (Concordia), Adele Perry (University of Manitoba) and Sarah Carter (University of Alberta). Writing New Histories of Indigineity and Imperialism welcomes research that deals with the many issues produced and shaped by North Americas uneven experience of colonization, indigenous persistence and resistance and nation-building. While focused on the particular historical context of North America, the workshop is committed to transnational, comparative and connective analyses of indigineity and imperialism and encourages applications from scholars whose research and interests span continents and nations. Likewise the workshop welcomes researchers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds, methodological approaches, and theoretical approaches including feminist, post-colonial, Marxist and post-modern perspectives. This workshop seeks applications from PhD candidates in the final phase of their studies (ie ABD) and those who have recently completed their doctorates (ie in the last two years). Financial assistance for travel within North America and accommodation will be available for graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and independent scholars. Please send a one-page curriculum vitae and a one-page description of your research directly to Adele Perry or Mary Jane McCallum at <[email protected]> by January 31, 2008.
