Call for Papers

"Nationalism and Human Rights"
Interdisciplinary Conference
IPSA Human Rights Research Committee
Human Rights Law Research Center, Istanbul Bilgi University
Istanbul (Turkey)
27-29 June 2008

The rise of nationalism and international recognition of
human rights have overlapping histories and cultural
baggage. One is often used to justify the other, and the
recognition of national identities and peoples’ right to
right to self-determination are treated as prerequisites of
the enjoyment of other rights. Nationalism, however, can
also function as a discriminatory and repressive force and
undermine human rights. This conference, co-sponsored by the
Human Rights Research Committee of the International
Political Science Association and the Human Rights Law
Research Center of Istanbul Bilgi University, will address
the complex relationship between nationalism and human
rights.

The conference is inter-disciplinary and open to all
researchers who are interested in the study of human rights.
Thus, papers that examine the relationship between the two
concepts with a focus on normative questions, social
scientific theories, legal foundations and implications, or
historical or contemporary case studies are all welcome. All
paper presentations will be in English.

Interested researchers should submit the abstracts of their
proposed papers, which should not exceed 500 words, to the
attention of Professor Füsun Türkmen by February 11, 2008.
The organizing committee will notify applicants by March 7,
2008.

Please note that participants are expected to cover their
own travel and accommodation expenses.
