Conference Announcement "Culture, Suicide, and the Human Condition" Interdisciplinary Symposium Department of Social Sciences, University of Kuopio Department of Sociology, University of Helsinki Therapeia Foundation Helsinki Collegium of Advanced Studies Helsinki (Finland) 14-16 February 2008 __________________________________________________ The aim of the interdisciplinary symposium is to discuss suicide from historical and cultural perspectives. We will address the following questions: - How is the definition of suicide based on western religious and philosophical ideas? - How is suicide defined and understood within various cosmologies across the cultures? - How is culture, nature, and society intertwined in our understanding of suicide? - How do the western ideas of the relationship between the self and society, embedded in social research on suicide, cause biases for research in non-western cultures? The workshop will bring together scholars from the fields of the humanities, social sciences, and psychiatry for discussions and establishment of an international research network in the area. Registration for the symposium is necessary.
