Call for Papers

"New Just Wars and New Holy Wars"
International Review of Sociology / Revue Internationale de
Sociologie
Special Issue (Fall 2008)

__________________________________________________

Paper proposals (English and French) are invited on any
aspect of the significance of “New Just Wars” and “New Holy
Wars” as well as on contemporary expressions or
legitimations of war (“Just” or “Holy”).

>>From Cicero to Erasmus and even until today, the concept of
“Just War” has been used to provide a foundation for both
rational and moral justification for going to war. The
classical humanism and the philosophy of law have tried, at
the Renaissance, to think and even to humanize the war,
especially with the decline of God in public affairs. The
ideal of justice will require honourable motives (jus ad
bellum) for the use of arms to be acceptable, but also how
to behave in hostilities will have to comply with a certain
restraint inspired by a sort of moral code (jus in bello).
Even Erasmus, the pacifist par excellence, admits that one
must defend himself against the Turks. On the other hand,
the notion of “Holy War”, also used by the three
monotheistic religions, offers a different argumentation for
entry into war. Becoming not only “Just” but “Holy”, the
human level of war is exceeded by one that does not tolerate
argument: God’s plan. Should it be the people of Yahweh, the
followers of Allah or the children of Christ, no opportunity
is given to discuss the foundations of the war, which is
conducive to an unbridled violence.

In this special issue of the International Review of
Sociology, we want to examine, and even to question, the
difference, if any, between those two types of war. What
boundaries should be raised between them or, on the
contrary, should we rather ignore them? What can we say
about them? Is there a significant or a simple rhetorical
effect? What criticisms can be made to authors who defend
the notion of “Just War”? Are there any events today that
may justify the conceptuel distinction between a “Just War”
and a “Holy War”?
