Call for Papers "Pluralism and Moral Disagreement" PhD Summer School 2008 Netherlands School for Research in Practical Philosophy Center for Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven Louvain Institute for Ireland in Europe Leuven (Belgium) 24-28 August 2008 __________________________________________________ Disagreement and a plurality of attitudes and convictions about political and moral issues form the background of various ethical and political debates. In modernity especially the role of the state is discussed against the background of the plurality of concepts of the good. However, the possibilities of conceptualizations of pluralism and moral disagreements are highly contested in meta-ethics and political philosophy. Value-pluralism, moral truth-claims and the moral basis of the modern state and communities are morally relevant discussions here. But it is also disputed how we should deal with these kinds of disagreement. Political negotiations and the call for tolerance and compromises are discussed in this context. During the summer school, various speakers that are experts in the field will give lectures on these thought-provoking issues. General perspectives in moral and political philosophy and selected debates in applied ethics about this topic shall be discussed. There will also be opportunity for the PhD-students to present their projects and to have tutorials with the speakers. Speakers: - Prof.dr. A. Burms (Leuven, opening lecture) - Prof.dr. C. Larmore (Brown University): Moral Disagreement and Modern Morality - Prof.dr. M. Düwell (Utrecht) & prof.dr. A.
