Call for Papers "Concepts of Identity and Difference" 5th Annual Colloquium Graduate Philosophy Student's Association, Concordia University Montreal, QC (Canada) 2-3 May 2008 __________________________________________________ We are welcoming paper submissions involving philosophical considerations of concepts of identity and difference, as well as interdisciplinary approaches to this topic, from realms such as logic, mathematics, linguistics, cognitive sciences, feminism, political theory, and the humanities. This is an interdisciplinary conference open to all faculties, and while we encourage submissions related to the theme of Concepts of Identity and Difference, submissions need not be limited to this topic. Examples of possible paper topics may include, but are not limited to: Dualisms and Dichotomies Establishing Identity in Language Identity and Subjectivity in the Public Sphere The State, Nationhood and Citizenship Responsibility and Group Membership Agency, Empowerment and Activism Representations of the Self in the Media Identity, Individuality, and Confronting Otherness Personal Identity over Space and Time Sex, Gender, Race, Ethnicity, and Inequality Speciesism, Anthropocentrism, and Classification Consciousness and Intentionality Culture and the Origin of Self History, Identity, and Culture Numbers as Self Subsistent Objects Keynote: John Russon, Presidential Distinguished Professor at the University of Guelph and author of Human Experience: Philosophy, Neurosis and the Elements of Everyday Life (2003). Submission guidelines All interested students are required to submit an abstract of no more than 500 words by March 3, 2008. Submissions via email must be in MS Word, RTF, or PDF format. Submissions are welcome in French or English, however, presentations will be given in English. Presenters will each be given 20 minutes for their presentation, followed by a brief commentary by a graduate student, concluding with a question and comment period from the floor. If accepted, you will be required to provide a complete version of your 10-15 page double-spaced paper by April 18, 2008. Your abstract should not include your name, but do include the following on a separate page: Name Paper title Affiliation (school, program, year) Email address Although priority will be given to graduate student submissions, some presentation slots will be reserved for strong undergraduate work.
