Announcement International Society for Islamic Philosophy World Congress of Philosophy in Seoul (Korea) Founding Session __________________________________________________ As an international team of ten Islamic scholars after a one-month seminar on Faith and reason in Our Day sponsored by the Council for Research in Values and Philosophy (www.crvp.org) we sense an urgent need to form an International Society for Islamic Philosophy. Its goal is to provide an open framework for cooperation among Islamic philosophers and related scholars. At a meeting on the 28th of March, 2008 we established a committee to draft the Constitutions of the Society. This reflects the emerging recognition of the importance of philosophical thought, and the challenge to Islamic philosophy to find a way to live faithfully in changing times and climes. Hopefully this can contribute to the progress of peoples generally in newly global age. If the establishment of such society is timely, then the World Congress of Philosophy provides the appropriate opportunity. Attached please find a draft constitution as a point of departure for expeditious discussion and appropriate action. In order to discuss this and to take appropriate action we hereby invite interested philosophers to a convocation in the context of the World Congress of Philosophy in Seoul, Korea, and specifically at the round table RT#53 entitled Reason and Wisdom in Islam to be held on August 3, 2008, 4-6pm. We do hope that you can take part. With all best regards. MISSION STATEMENT This Society will be known as the International Society for Islamic Philosophy (hereafter abbreviated as ISIP). The term Islamic Philosophy embraces the whole spectrum of logical, epistemological, scientific, metaphysical, ethical, social and aesthetical thought in the context of Islam throughout its history. What makes Islamic philosophy Islamic is not merely the intellectual aspect, but also the spiritual aspect of the discovery of the self, and ultimately of God. The Society is dedicated to retrieving and developing the Islamic intellectual heritage through the collaboration of its members for the purpose of making perennial philosophical values accessible to the contemporary world. It is also dedicated to deep reflection on these values and their application to the challenges of our increasingly secularized and pluralistic global world. The Societys membership is open to all who are involved in the study of Islamic philosophy and allied disciplines. OBJECTIVES 1. To build networks in Muslim societies for the promotion of classical and contemporary Islamic philosophy. 2. To build space for diverse philosophical voices in Muslim societies. 3. To promote the teaching of, and research in, Islamic philosophy. 4. To promote the reformation and development of Islamic philosophy in the light of contemporary knowledge. 5. To develop appropriate methodologies that will help scholars of Islamic philosophy to meet the challenges of globalization. 6. To encourage and promote seminars, workshops, conferences and publications on Islamic philosophy. 7.
