Call for Papers "At the border" Ethics & Global Politics Special Issue, Vol. 1 No. 4 (2008) __________________________________________________ The growing number of migrants and refugees in the world has turned border issues into a prioritized area of politics in many countries. What happens at the border has become a subject of increasing political debate, ranging from discussions of how welfare states should accommodate refugees to debates on security and the range of moral responsibility. However, while what happens at the border has become an area of intensified politics, much academic thinking on ethics and politics is still predicated on what happens beyond and within borders. It proceeds from a conflict between cosmopolitanism and nationalism, or between human rights and popular sovereignty. In this respect, migration raises vital questions for moral and democratic theory. How should one conceive of the political activity that currently takes place at national borders? In what ways do refugee questions and questions of migration challenge contemporary moral and democratic theory? Are we witnessing conflicts and/or stratifications in contemporary politics that have not been sufficiently addressed in theoretical terms? If so, what new theoretical approaches do they call for? We welcome contributions that seek to conceptualize or understand what happens at the border - generally speaking. Papers may proceed from, but need not be limited to, discussions of sovereignty, nationhood, populism, human rights and constitutionalism. This special issue will include articles by, among others, the following authors: Hans Lindahl, John Agnew, Wendy Brown and Hauke Brunkhorst. If you want to contribute to this issue, please ensure that your manuscript is submitted before July 7, 2008. The issue is scheduled for Q4 2008. Ethics & Global Politics is an Open Access, peer reviewed scholarly journal published by Co-Action Publishing with support from the Department of Political Science at Stockholm University, Sweden. Ethics & Global Politics looks to foster theoretical contributions to the study of global politics by providing a forum for presenting novel ways of understanding and conceptualizing the global political challenges the world faces today. Ethics & Global Politics is published under the Open Access model and is therefore free for anyone to read and download, and to copy and disseminate for educational purposes.
