Call for Papers "Humanistic and Engaged Buddhism - Patterns and Prospects" International Conference Foguang University Illan (Taiwan) 22-27 March 2009 __________________________________________________ An international conference on "Humanistic and Engaged Buddhism - Patterns and Prospects" will be held at Foguang University in Illan, Taiwan, Sunday, March 22 through Friday, March 27, 2009. Scholars will address the rise of Humanistic Buddhist movements of East Asia and Engaged Buddhist movements of South Asia and the West during the last century. The conference is sponsored by the Center for the Study of Humanistic Buddhism, Chinese University of Hong Kong; The Harvard-Yenching Institute; and Foguang Shan Foundation for Buddhist Culture and Education. While Humanistic and Engaged Buddhism share historical and structural features - particularly their emphasis on relieving suffering here and now - their similarities and differences and their unique contributions to the evolution of the Buddhist Dharma have not been studied to date. The conference features panels on the history and theory of Humanistic and Engaged Buddhism, its relation to movements for social and sangha reform, the political challenges and economics of the new movements, the role of information and management technology in the new Buddhism, and the future prospects of these movements. Research proposals are due August 1 and final papers due January 1.
