Call for Papers "Think Asia!" International Convention of Asia Scholars Center for Asian Regional Studies (CARS), Chungnam National University (CNU) Daejeon (Korea) 6-9 August 2009 __________________________________________________ The overarching theme of the 6th International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS 6) is: Think Asia! Who does not have Asia on his or her mind nowadays? It seems as if in a split second Asia has taken center stage. Is it a miracle or sheer hard work? Now that Asia is in the limelight the world is fast becoming aware of its varied culture, its rich environment and its polyglot background. Asia is everywhere. Its material and spiritual produce have become part and parcel of a global cultural pulse which pushes the frontiers of the human and natural sciences further into unchartered territories. The venue for ICAS 6, Daejeon, successfully merges its long history of culture and tradition with leading research in science and technology. ICAS 6 will provide the platform to re-think Asia and all its facets. The International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS) is one of the largest biennial gatherings for Asia scholars to meet and discuss new developments in the fields of the Human and Natural Sciences. Since 1998, ICAS has brought more than 5,000 academics from 60 countries together at five conventions. Registration Individual participants: Individual participants should fill in the registration form for individual participants. Participants will be grouped into panels with other participants working on a similar theme by the Selection Committee of ICAS 6. One of the senior participants will be asked to chair a session and create, together with the participants, a group abstract. You will first be informed whether you're abstract is accepted, then you will be informed in which panel you are placed and give you the contact details of the other participants. We encourage grouped panels to interact before the conference to discuss the schedule of the panel (order and length of presentation) and write a panel abstract for inclusion in the programme (e-)book. Panel Submission: A panel consists of 4 or 5 participants (including chair/discussant). Each panel should have a chair and/or discussant. Each panel will have a time slot of 2 hours. If you would like to submit multiple panels, please submit each per panel slot. The title of the panel may be the same, but number it (Ex. Law and Order I, Law and Order II). You can submit a maximum of four panels with the same theme/title. Organized panels: Organized panels are panels that are submitted by a group of individual scholars. Convenors of organized panels are asked to submit a panel title and abstract and the title and abstracts of the participants. They are also asked to include the contact details of each of the participants so that the letter of acceptance and the invitation letter can be sent directly to the participants. Institutional panels: Institutional panels are panels organized and financed by institutions. Considering that the contact person may be different from the convenor, the registration form is somewhat different from the organized panel form. As a token of appreciation for the institute's efforts, the institution is acknowledged in the conference programme. Deadlines 15 October 2008: Submission of Individual Abstracts. 15 October 2008: Submission of Organized Panels: organized by a group of different (national) backgrounds. 15 November 2008: Submission of Institutional Panels: constituted and sponsored by an institution, association or a network. Submission of abstracts for panels and papers can be made through ICAS 6 registration forms available at: http://www.icassecretariat.org/index.php?q=registration ICAS Book Prize For the third time the ICAS Book Prizes will be awarded in the categories: Humanities, Social Sciences, Best PhD and Colleagues' Choice Award. Deadline: 31 August 2008 ICAS Publications Series A selection of the ICAS 6 papers will be included in edited volumes of the ICAS Publications Series at Amsterdam University Press. Financial support Limited financial assistance will be available for young scholars who require funding support. The amount of financial subsidy awarded is contingent on the availability of funds and the merit of each application. Funding subsidy may be used for the cost of traveling, accommodation and registration fees. The ICAS 6 Selection Committee will evaluate all applications on a case-by-case basis and decisions made are final. Preference for financial assistance will be given to young scholars from developing countries (Asia, Africa, Latin-America, Eastern Europe).
