Call for Papers "Regions, States, Peoples, and People in a World of Different Worlds" Inaugural Conference 2009 International Studies Association Asia-Pacific Region (ISA-APR) Brisbane, QLD (Australia) 1-2 July 2009 __________________________________________________ Empirical as well as intellectual developments over recent decades have contributed to a renaissance of the study of identities and differences, and their significance for social and political relations. The rise - perceived or actual - of non-state actors, whether in the contexts of security challenges, emerging transnational social and economic governance, or struggles for social and political justice, has compounded the sense that analysis of inter-national relations requires at the very least more comprehensive complementary analysis of relational dynamics above, below, and across the coordinates of the system of international politics. Against this background, there is more than impressionistic evidence of large-scale change in world politics. As social and political worlds marked by their cultural, religious, social, political, and institutional differences encounter one another in the context of global challenges, it would seem that the word relations ought to command much more attention than its geographical adjectives (international, global social, or transnational). Focussing on the relations between regions, states, peoples and people, will foreground perceptions and misperceptions, different - and perhaps competing - conceptions of self-other relations, and the different registers of encounters these enable. The Asia-Pacific Region, with its intertwined histories, its diverse institutional practices, its plethora of challenges, and its sets of contradictory pressures set alongside seismic shifts in social and economic development, invites such relational approaches, particularly at a time of its ascendancy in the global context. The inaugural Convention of the recently constituted Asia-Pacific Regional Chapter of the International Studies Association invites proposals for panels, roundtables, and individual papers on and around the conference theme broadly construed. The relational focus may work within, or across conventional divisions of labour in our field (e.g. Diplomacy, Foreign Policy, Security Studies, International History, Post-Colonial Studies, Ethics and International Law, International/Global Political Economy, International Political Sociology, Social and Political Theory). In addition to submission under the Convention Theme, we invite submissions in all three categories (papers, panels, and roundtables) for any other areas of interest within our field, and would like to encourage contributions especially on the following topics (listed here in no particular order): - Politics of Development and Social Change - Conflict Resolution and Reconciliation - Politics and Ethics of Humanitarian Intervention, and ‘Responsibility to Protect’ - The Future of Multilateralism, Regional and Global - Human rights and human security - People movement - Great powers in the region - Terrorism - Regional Security - Political Economy - International History - International Political Theory - Arms Control and Disarmament - Security Communities - Inter-Civilizational Encounters - Environmental Politics - Energy Security - International Relations Theory - Historical Sociology - Terrorism and Counter-Terrorism in Asia-Pacific and Beyond Proposals for Panels, Roundtables, and Individual Papers should be submitted by close of business on February 13, 2009.
