Call for Applications "Diversity and Democracy: Trust, Representation and Equality" International Summer Institute Queens University Université du Québec à Montréal University of Toronto Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la diversité au Québec (CRIDAQ) Universidad de Guadalajara Guadalajara (Mexico) 1-27 June 2009 __________________________________________________ Co-organizers: Victor Armony and Alain Gagnon (Université du Québec à Montréal) Ethnicity and Democratic Governances group (EDG) leds by Queens University, Université du Québec à Montréal and University of Toronto, in partnership with Centre de recherche interdisciplinaire sur la diversité au Québec (CRIDAQ) and the Universidad de Guadalajara will be hosting the next International Summer Institute from 1 to 27 June 2009. Up to 36 participants will be attending the 2009 International Summer School, as part of a Canadian Major Collaborative Research Initiatives (MCRI) on Ethnicity and Democratic Governance Main Goals - Provide a well-structured, collaborative, and inter-disciplinary learning environment for students whose research is relevant to the EDG project. - Study diversity and democracy from different theoretical perspectives. - Establish an international forum for cooperation. Main features More than ten distinguished EDG scholars who will take an active role in the Institute; scholars from Univerdidad de Guadalajara, the hosting institution, as well as several recognized guest lecturers from Mexico and Latin America will take part in the seminars, workshops, lectures, and discussion groups. Gagnon, EDG, Université du Québec à Montréal Will Kymlicka, EDG, Queens University André Lecours, Université Concordia Patti Lenard, Harvard University John McGarry, EDG, Queens University Geneviève Nootens, EDG, Université du Québec à Chicoutimi Guillermo de la Peña, CIESAS, Guadalajara Michel Seymour, EDG, Université de Montréal Raúl Solis, Universidad de Guadalajara General topics General topics include: Causes of ethnic community formation, political mobilization and conflict; cultural politics of ethnic development and identities, including analysis of the role of religious institutions, schools, mass media, political parties and popular culture; political economy of ethnic differentiation, including patterns of labor migration and urbanization; extent to which the international community can facilitate peaceful resolution of ethnic and political conflicts. Three themes will be at the centre at the debates: trust, representation and equality. Financial assistance The EDG contributes in a very significant way by providing room and board to graduate students for the duration of the summer school. Students are strongly encouraged to approach their respective University to cover air fare. However, additional funds could be requested from agencies such as the Office Québec Amérique pour la Jeunesse. Participants will contribute 200$ to cover part of the summer schools expenditures. Furthermore, the attendees will pay for their travel expenses, field trips and local outing. Accommodation Students will be invited to share room facilities on the basis of two per unit. An effort will be made to encourage students with different linguistic and academic backgrounds to share accommodation. Language The principal language of work will be English. Although, there will be some public events that will be hosted either in French or in Spanish. Cultural activities One of the main goals of the Summer School is to explore cultural diversity to deepen ones knowledge of the host country. Efforts will be made to include visits to museums, cultural activities, and to plan a field trip to an aboriginal village.
